October

Liturgical Season — Ordinary Time

During October we remain in Ordinary Time, continuing to listen to Jesus teaching his disciples about the Kingdom of God.

Again and again, the Gospel challenges us to grow: to become more merciful, generous, faithful and willing to serve others.

Ordinary Time is, in many ways, the Church’s school of discipleship.

Monthly Devotion — The Holy Rosary

October is traditionally associated with the Holy Rosary.

The Rosary is a way of contemplating the Gospel with Mary. Through its mysteries we reflect on the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus.

Mary never draws attention towards herself. Her role is always to lead us towards Christ: “Do whatever he tells you.”

CST of the Month — Human Dignity

At the foundation of Catholic Social Teaching is a simple but demanding belief: every human being is made in the image and likeness of God.

Our dignity does not depend upon intelligence, achievement, popularity, wealth, age, health or ability. It is not something that can be earned or lost. Every person possesses dignity simply because they are human and loved by God.

This belief changes how Christians are called to see other people. Nobody should be treated as an object, a problem or someone whose life matters less than another.

Mary gives us a powerful example of human dignity. God invites an ordinary human being to take part freely in his plan of salvation. Her dignity is respected: she listens, questions and responds.

The mystery of the Incarnation takes this even further. In Jesus, God himself becomes human. Human life is revealed as something of extraordinary value.

Question to consider:

Do I treat every person as someone made in God’s image?
